The tournament leader and the runner-up both won their games, the only decisive games, in the penultimate round of the Candidates Tournament 2018 in Berlin.  Prior to this round Fabiano Caruana had 7 points and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov had 6.5 points.  With them both winning their games this round they are at the top of the tightly knit stack of players with Fabiano having 8 points and Shakhiriyar tied with Karjakin at 7.5 points.  One round to go and there is the increasing possibility of playoffs.
