Candidates 2018 / Round 14 / Final

Fabiano Caruana

Well – That’s It !  Fabiano Caruana wins the Candidates Tournament 2018 in Berlin – by a full point !  Caruana also won his final game against Alexander Grischuk and that game was the single decisive game of the Final Round.  Once again Fabiano played the Petrof Defense as Black.  He has made this opening a standard in his repertoire.  It is not particularly exciting, but keeps the “draw in hand” and offers winning chances for those able and willing to play fairly long games and squeeze the blood from a turnip.  This final game against Grischuk was not an exception – and – it was a hard fought good game.  A U.S. player will once again play for the World Chess Championship; this one against Magnus Carlson.  Congratulations To Caruana !
