It’s one of the most famous stories in chess history. After losing the first, Bobby Fischer didn’t show up for the second game of the 1972 World Championship match against Boris Spassky. The American was 0-2 down, and demanded that the third game would be played in a small room backstage.

n 1961 Bobby Fischer wrote A Bust to the King’s Gambit, a now famous article in which he set out, in typically uncompromising language, to do exactly as the title says. His idea was to play 1 e4 e5 2 f4 exf4 3 Nf3 d6, avoiding the Kieseritsky variation (3…g5 4 h4 g4 5 Ne5) which Spassky had used to defeat him a couple of years before…….

Auction house Weiss Auctions ..has sold the chess set used in the infamous Game 3 of the World Chess Championship Match of 1972 between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky for $67,500.
