Grand Chess Tour Croatia 2019 / Round 1

by National Life Master Loal Davis

The world champion Magnus Carlsen will face 11 top contenders in Croatia Grand Chess Tour. The tournament will take place from 26th of June to 8th of July in Zagreb, Croatia. Everyone plays each other in 11 rounds of classical chess.

Tiebreaks: Rapid and Blitz playoffs for the first place only.

Time control : 130 minutes, with a 30-second delay from move one.

In the first round there were four decisive results.  Carlsen looked to have a rather easy time on the Black side of a Sicilian against Giri.  Caruana took out Nakamura in a game that wobbled back and forth in a nice fight where Fabiano ended up doubling his Rooks on the 7th rank.  Wesley So was already much better against Liren Ding when he decided to part with his Queen for a Rook and two Bishops.  The disappointment for me was Anand’s loss against Nepomniachtchi.  Vishy has been getting into rather placid Italian positions with some regularity of late.  By the 25th move, he was beginning to tie himself into knots with a horrible Bishop buried behind his own Pawns.  His Queen’s Rook never got into the game.  Please play something else.
