Viswanathan Anand was merciless in his play against Yifan Hou.

Move 23 above was in all probability lost for Black.  If there was an outright mistake after that it was not at all clear.  I could not see any way for Black to hold this.  That’s quite a compliment to Anand who was relentless in his pursuit of the full point.

Move 27 above would not allow Rd8 to exchange Rooks as White would get in c7 and holding the Queen and Pawn ending with a Pawn on the 7th would be virtually impossible.

Move 29 above threatened a Rook to the 7th hitting the Queen and the f7 Pawn.  Black played his King to h7 when White played Qe4+.  That was a deadly square as it took away a flight square for the Black King and set up some nice back row tactics.

Move 31 above did not allow Black to capture the ‘c6’ Pawn as White had a Rook check on d8 – tricky – and Black loses the Queen.  This meant that White finally got the passed Pawn to the 7th – again it could not be captured because of the back row check and Hou was squished.

Final Position above – there is no stopping Rd8.  An impressive display by Anand.

Already under severe pressure by move 15 (and losing) Gawain Jones elected to sacrifice a piece.  It did not stem the onslaught and although the material balance tilted slightly he was finely ground down by Wesley So.
