Norway Chess Classic / Rd 9 / Final – Topalov Wins !

Veselin Topalov vs ViswanathanAnand never looked like anything but a draw; a rather disappointing one at that.  Veselin of course need only that to win the tournament by a half point; it was up to Anand to take up the baton and fight.  Of course it’s relatively easy to poke from the sidelines and it was the last round; exhaustion may play a part – but hey – if I were in a shot for first place by taking out the leader, I’d make sure I got a good night’s sleep so I could take my shots.  The temperament of Topalov was understandable; Anand less so.  Nevertheless – Congratulations to Topalov for a fine tournament – and – against this level of competition; a fine feather in his cap.  Nakamura won a fine game against Aronian to place Hikaru in a tie for second place with Anand.  The stinger of the round however was Hammer’s win against Carlsen.  It was supremely well played and gave Magnus his fourth loss in nine games.
