The Jack of Hearts

Jack of Hearts first appeared in the black & white magazine Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #22 (March, 1976), and was created by writer Bill Mantlo and illustrator Keith Giffen. He was presented as an antagonist for the superhero White Tiger but his origin story in the following issue established him as a hero. His debut appearance in a color comic book was in Incredible Hulk #214 where he fought the Hulk, whom Jack mistakenly believed to be a threat. He later served a brief stint as an ally and apprentice of Iron Man, becoming a regular cast member of the series during Mantlo’s tenure as writer.

  1. Jack has made various guest appearances in several books over the years, including Marvel Two-In-One, The Defenders, Marvel Premiere, (in a solo story meant to launch the character in his own series) ROM, and Marvel Team-Up, (which served as an intro to his 1984 mini-series) among others. He starred in his own self-titled, four issue limited series from January to April 1984.

  2. In English-style decks, the Jack and the other face cards represent no one in particular, in contrast to the historical French practice, in which each court card is said to represent a particular historical or mythological personage. The Jack of Hearts Represents Étienne de Vignolles, called La Hire (born 1390 – died 11 January 1443) One explanation for his nickname of La Hire would be that the English had nicknamed “the Hire-God” (Ira Dei: the wrath of God). Alternatively, his name may simply come from the French “hedgehog” because he had a prickly disposition…

A game where JACK is “King”..
Euchre or eucre, is a trick-taking card game most commonly played with four people in two partnerships with a deck of 24 standard playing cards, It is the game responsible for introducing the joker into modern packs; this was invented around 1860 to act as a top trump or best bower (from the German word Bauer, “farmer”, denoting also the jack)….

When a suit is named trump, any card of that suit outranks any card of a non-trump suit. The highest ranking card in traditional euchre is the Jack of the trump suit (called ‘The Right Bower’ or ‘Right’) then the other Jack of the same color (the “next” suit), (called ‘The Left Bower’ or ‘Left’). The cards are ranked, in descending order, J (of trump suit) J (same color as trump suit) A, K, Q, 10, and 9.
The remaining cards rank in the usual order (the jacks are not “special”) and the cards of those suits rank from high to low as A, K, Q, J, 10, and 9.
